PHMG Foundation: Support Dogs

Posted by PHMG Foundation on

This year, Support Dogs is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a charity, and in this time they’ve given thousands of people a sense of freedom that wouldn’t have been possible without their help. It’s an organisation that’s close to the hearts of many of our staff – including our Credit Control and Data teams, who’ll be fundraising for the charity in 2017. Read on to learn about the Support Dogs’ important work, and see what the teams have been doing so far this year to show their support.

Support Dogs are a UK charity dedicated to increasing independence and quality of life for people with various medical conditions. Their dogs are individually trained to provide assistance to children and adults with autism, epilepsy and other life-limiting disabilities – whether they’re offering practical help such as loading and unloading a washing machine, or providing emotional support by offering comfort and stability. Their seizure alert dogs are especially trained to detect an oncoming seizure up to 50 minutes prior to it occurring, giving the owner time to find a place of safety and privacy as they deal with the attack. Without the assistance of these dogs, epilepsy sufferers wouldn’t be able to lead the independent lives that we all take for granted. Every 10 hours Support Dogs receives a plea from a family who needs an assistance dog, and this demand is only increasing. With no government funding, the charity relies on 100% donation and fundraising – making corporate partnerships like ours all the more important.

We’re over half way through another year of fundraising, and The Credit Control team have already proven their commitment to Support Dogs. In April, Head of Credit Control Claire Harris and Legal Manager James Fletcher completed a strenuous 110km trek along the Sandstone Trail, enduring the treacherous terrain for over 24 hours. But their hard work was all made worthwhile when the final fundraising figure was revealed – an incredible £6,000 for this worthy charity. Throughout the rest of the year, the team plan to complete a marathon of 5k races – and they’ve already finished their first three events.
